Healthy collections - Plastic Boxes

Healthcare Environmental Services Group is the largest privately-owned medical waste provider within the UK. It operates its own treatment and disposal facilities from its regionalised depots throughout the country and has one of the largest collection fleets dedicated to the safe collection of waste.

The company was formed in the early ’90s and has always put the emphasis on waste management, not disposal. It currently services a wide range of industries through its specialised vehicle network, with its services being available 24 hours a day, 365 days per year. The staff and their dedication to detail are paramount to the company’s success. Healthcare is a recognised Investor in People Company and quality assured ISO 9001 & 14001 with dedicated and trained staff at all of its locations.

Healthcare collects and processes all types of waste including clinical, pharmaceutical and radioactive wastes from within the healthcare industry along with various types of hazardous wastes, including lab chemicals; solvents are dealt with on a regular basis.

The company is contracted to supply a collection service to a wide variety of private and health authorities throughout the UK. This involves collecting waste from approximately 20,000 locations from in excess of 1,000 customers.
Recent developments have meant that the company has had to add some core waste solution products due to customer demand, including the supply of fluorescent light tube boxes, disposal and recycling of batteries, WEEE recycling and finally the 55-litre ‘Haz’ box. This box is designed for limited quantities of certain types of hazardous waste. This division of the business is set to expand during 2010, offering small producers of hazardous waste an easy, inexpensive option of providing a safe collection of hazardous wastes that cannot be thrown away into your general waste bin. Primarily, it works a lot like the recyclable box you have at home but allows you to put many types of hazardous materials into the box ready for uplift.

Having studied boxes available on the marketplace, Healthcare approached Casting Support Systems (CSS) Ltd of Paignton, Devon to evaluate the 55-litre and 70-litre Tote boxes available from its range. It was quickly established that the boxes were of very substantial, robust construction and ideally suited to the arduous conditions in which they are required to perform. Made from ‘super-tough’ polypropylene, the boxes can be fitted with RFID chips or bar codes for full traceability. Furthermore, they can be supplied in the customer livery with logos printed on the sides and can be sealed using appropriate seals available from CSS Ltd. Other boxes or bins from CSS Ltd include kerbside, storage/sorting and delivery box, available in 55-litre size.

George Putland of CSS Ltd, is particularly keen to discuss the requirements of waste and recycling companies to offer bespoke solutions to waste handling. I am always available to discuss problem areas and can be reached on 01757 708824 or gp.cssltd@dsl.pipex.com

Going forward, CSS will develop a range of boxes aimed at waste management and recycling.” Healthcare will recycle and reuse as much of the wastes where possible, and each box is security chipped, and full track and trace is available through Healthcare’s leading tracking facilities function.

This year also marks the start of a new era with the launch of Healthcare Sharps, the UK’s first reusable sharps container, which is fully UN & BS certified and offers so many benefits, including huge reduction in needle stick injuries and full traceability with wireless RFID tracking.
